What is a mattress topper
A mattress topper is the best way to give yourself the extra layer of comfort and luxury without spending a fortune for the same.
When planning to buy a mattress topper or a mattress pad for your old mattress, you need to consider a lot of options. These options differ on several factors such as thickness, the material used, the quality and firmness of the layer, the comfort it offers, its ventilating ability and motion isolation, etc.
On the basis of the material used, a mattress topper can be of several types. It can be a memory foam mattress topper, an innerspring mattress topper, a coir mattress topper, or a latex mattress topper.
Today we are going to discuss the features offered by a coir mattress topper and spring mattress topper. By the end of the post, you should be able to differentiate between the two and make the right choice for yourself.
Spring mattress topper
A spring mattress topper is made from metal coils covered with fabric or a layer of foam. These usually have a long life span, but that depends on the number of coils and the quality of metal coils used.
These mattresses are lighter usually, compared to a coir mattress.
However, over a period of time and use, the spring coils start making a squeaky sound, which can be annoying and can affect sleep. Also, unlike a memory foam mattress topper, this one cannot distribute the bodyweight of the sleeper or ensure natural spinal alignment. Hence, it might cause postural defects or back pain later on.
Also, a spring mattress topper needs more maintenance than a coir one.
Coir mattress topper
A coir mattress topper is made of coconut husk. These are firm and offer a more comfortable sleep compared to a spring mattress due to the good ventilation they provide. They can circulate both heat and air through them, and so, the sleeper sleeps comfortably through the night.
These mattress toppers are hypoallergenic. This is great news for asthmatic people and people who are allergic to dust, pollen, microbes, moulds, etc.
Since coir mattress toppers are natural, they give the sleeper greater bounce compared to spring mattress toppers. Greater bounciness means better support. Also, coir mattress toppers are best suited for people who sleep on their backs. Unlike memory foam mattress toppers, coir cannot accommodate all sleeping positions.
Coir is zero maintenance, which gives it a huge advantage over spring. However, it is not very durable. It will start sagging easily, along the edges first and then throughout the mattress.
Why I need a mattress topper
In case you are still wondering why you need a mattress topper, here are our top 4 reasons.
Firstly, a mattress topper allows you to get the comfort and luxury of a premium mattress without investing in the latter. You don’t want to spend a fortune on a new mattress because you have an old one that is not too old to be replaced. The best solution in such a case is to get a mattress topper that suits your individual sleep requirements. The factors to look at are firmness, support, hypoallergenic quality, comfort, and motion isolation.
Secondly, support is a very important factor when choosing a mattress topper and so it needs to be reiterated. Anyone who has a mattress that is ageing along the edges or is lacking the firmness it once had, is definitely not getting good sleep. When a mattress loses its firmness, it creates pressure points in the sleeper’s neck, shoulders, and hips. To avoid this without buying a new mattress, get yourself a mattress topper.
Thirdly, when people gain weight suddenly, their mattresses cannot support them anymore. In such cases too, a mattress topper comes in handy.
Finally, for people sharing a bed, there is a chance that one person prefers more firmness than the other. In such cases, it is easy to resolve the problem by using a mattress topper on one side.
